Nichole’s poetry about life and her take on the 9/11 tragedy were interesting posts to read. The comments on both posts were also thought provoking. I really liked the way she described our life’s journey from the cradle to the grave and how we are born without a memory and we have to leave this world alone. I actually believe we will have someone who has gone on before us to help guide us.

I can see where there are spelling and grammatical errors with both Nichole’s post and the comments attached to it. I feel like she is doing more of a free write type piece and not focusing on sentence structure, grammar, etc.

I can definitely see the value in having students discuss important topics, controversial topics, current events, dreams, fears, etc. It gets them thinking and writing about their thinking. The whole technology component adds engagement to the writing process.

As a first grade teacher, I am not sure if this is the route I would take with my own blog. I can see having a simpler version of a student response to homework assignments, a question, recommending a book, etc. I do think my students would be excited by the technology aspect, but I’m not sure how far to go with it.

I use a class web page for my disclosure, homework, spelling, etc. I post assignments on the web page and photos, etc. I need to decide how to most effectively use a blog with my students. I can think of many fun ways to use it with older students, but first graders are a unique group. Perhaps I could have my students select writing pieces to publish on our class blog and parents could comment as well as the students on their work. That is a good possibility.
